Lee Yuk Sa (이 육사, 1904 ~ 1944) 

Lee Yuk Sa was one the first generation of Korean modern poets. A member of the of the Korean Liberation Army, he is revered as one of the major resistant poet who wrote during the Japanese colonial period. He became a poet in his late 20's, coinciding with his political activism. In his short life, he had endured numerous arrest and imprisonment which always included physical torture. Yet, he was able to complete 36 poems, several critical essays on current issues(of literary, politics  social) of his time, one short stories. His poems attest to his resilience of spirit against hardship and his deep faith in humanity. Lee Yuk Sa is the pen name of Lee Wonrok. His pen name is taken from his prison cell number ”264” which in Korean reads “lee yuk sa.” He died in a Japanese prison in Beijing in 1944, January, 16.
